i, the Artist | Artist Introduction : KEUNG Wai Kai

18 June 2026

This ink painting, titled "Lotus" by Wai-kai that embodies the spirit of "rising untarnished from the mud." By blending modern ink-dyeing techniques with the bold color contrasts and abstract elements of Western art, he creates a piece with a distinctly contemporary feel. Wai-kai admits that ink painting is more demanding than working with acrylics; much like calligraphy, it requires precise control over ink density and dilution, as the slightest imbalance can compromise the entire composition.
To create this piece, Wai-kai first crumples the paper and then flattens it to produce spontaneous, organic textures. Consequently, the physical process—crumpling paper, gripping the brush, and dabbing ink—serves as excellent exercise for hand muscle coordination. Engaging with diverse artistic media not only fulfills his creative drive but also nurtures his emotional well-being, greatly enhancing his inner vitality.
