LAU Cheuk-kam

“Drawing makes me focus and calm. I get to know myself better, and I also get to know Vincent van Gogh and Piscasso.”

LAU Cheuk-kam has a very loud voice. Everyone living in the Rehabilitation Complex knows that.  Besides, he had been very emotional.  However, his emotions have a way out through drawing. So, he has become “less talk, more work”.  Cheuk-kam has found his interest and he thus becomes more focused.

Having epilepsy and cannot walk steadily, he has to wear a helmet to protect his head. He also needs to wear thick glasses due to his low vision. All these become a heavy load on his head. Nonetheless, this does not affect his passion for drawing. He still paints each piece of his works diligently with his head lowers down because he enjoys very much the compliments and recognition from others.

When Cheuk-kam is drawing, he holds his brush dipped with paints in an inclined position over the canvas, then he gently drags it along. The weight of the brush and the friction caused by the pressing force disturb the path of the stroke. He pauses for a while to give time to the brush drunk with pigments to release the colors. Blending with water, the paints slither to the tip of the brush. The heavy pigment particles sink into the grid of the canvas while the water molecules spread out with the less dense color powder. Cheuk-kam, with his head leaning against his neck pillow, watches the fading out of the colors on the canvas until it stops. Then, he gathers his strength again, to soak his brush in the paints.

When observing closely the way Cheuk-kam doing his painting, you will feel he is slow and serene. But when you stand before his paintings, you can see there are rolling waves inside him.
