LEE Pui-lung
Fluctuant Sketch Artist
“Sketching between laughter and tears is always a precious moment.”
If arts start from a point, Pui-lung’s road to succeed also starts from a point. To narrate his progress briefly: In the first year, he always cried in the class. Suspiciously, he was spending the whole year to observe secretly what learning of arts was. In the second year, he could draw a point. In the third year, he could draw a line. In the fourth year, he had to catch up with all the work left behind. He was in the mode of full operation.
Having a character to express emotions unreservedly, Pui-lung always cries while he is painting.
He completed the series “Crying Sketches”: thirteen portraits of himself as well as of his classmates by his unique way of sketching. The figures in his paintings have funny appearance. With empty facial expressions, they appear to be incomprehensible and unpredictable. The strong and powerful brush strokes together with the crossing lines in various spacing arrangements constitute irregular zones of light and shade. The boundary between the figures and the background is blurred leading to the formation of an atmosphere of stillness and subtlety. Three of the works received the Award of the Overseas Work by the Diversity in the Arts 2019 of Japan.
